Since 1996 BICOM has signed a number of agreements with NEC, SAMSUNG, COMDIAL and PANASONIC corporations to build in-skin voice and fax processing platforms using standard BICOM technology. BICOM in-skin product (sometimes also called “blade”) is a personal computer integrated with DSP and voice processing drivers. It is designed to plug directly into the backplane of a PBX. The first iteration of the product is customized to work with NEC Electra Pro phone systems. The Electra Pro In-Skin occupies a single card slot and supports eight ports. Because the In-Skin is recognized by the switch as a voice resource it does not reduce availability of trunk or phone ports, which is a key benefit of the In-Skin platform. Other benefits include easier installation, maintenance, and the security of built-in power protection. The NEC Electra Elite CTI In-Skin product supports faster processors that can run on Windows NT and supports up to 32 ports.
